Greatest Accomplishment I'd always wanted to start my own company. While studying Architectural Science at Ryerson University I dreamed about having a cool studio and retrofitting old factories “New York” style. I still recall walking into the Peanut Factory Lofts in Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood and knew I craved this work. In 2001 I ventured out and founded Flat Iron Building Group Inc. with a partner. Following a successful 5 years our strategic focus changed and I decided it was best to be independent from partnership. In 2006 I became sole proprietor of the company. On a cold December evening I found myself alone in a small office performing all tasks required to keep my goal alive. From this relaunch, Flat Iron continues its strategic growth. I am encouraged and excited about our future.
Lessons Learned I used to approach project delivery in a very ‘old school’ manner that may have been too aggressive but have since realized the many advantages of a more open, collaborative methodology.

I not only gained technical knowledge and experience from new building innovations, LEED® NC initiatives and alternative work strategies but was also extremely grateful to be surrounded by a dedicated team and a fabulous client. I know I formed friendships there that will last a lifetime. It’s amazing how close you become when you work together 24/7!

When it comes to making an impact on the environment, green building initiatives, and high performance work environments, Flat Iron’s goal is to lead by example. We are members of the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC) and active in the Greater Toronto Chapter.

We believe it is imperative to engage people in the discussion. This discussion is urgent, necessary and extremely important. It’s the human element that’s in every workspace. Together, we are partnering with our industry, designers, tenant service providers and clients to incorporate processes that drive waste out of the building while enhancing sustainability.

Sustainability at Flat Iron is, from an internal perspective, a way to teach the organization to look at interior construction in different ways. It’s a way of changing behaviour. Changing how we procure products and services, how we build, how we act and how we carry forward. It’s our approach to looking at the construction process and the planet through a different lens.

Health & Safety

The Management of Flat Iron Building Group Inc. is committed to the health and safety of its employees and for all who are involved in our projects. Protection from injury or occupational stresses is our objective. We strive for an accident free workplace through administration, education and training. All supervisors and workers must think safety first. Together we can eliminate the “near misses” and greatly reduce the risk of injuries.

OUR GOAL: “No One Gets Hurt”

Health and Safety View our Health & Safety Policy Statement Health and Safety

We also promote Health & Safety both on and off a project site.

“I thoroughly enjoy working with Flat Iron because they have a wonderful sense of team spirit and a strong work ethic. There is always someone who is willing to help, even if they are not directly involved in the project, which greatly helps move the work along. Their online paperwork management system is also superb and contains up to date information at one’s fingertips, a rare find.”

"At the 10 year mark, we decided to invest in a new, purpose-built office space for our growing company. We chose Flat Iron as our construction manager based on the thoroughness of their proposal and their ability to meet our aggressive timelines. And they delivered! The project was well managed from start to finish. The workmanship and attention to detail was excellent. The on-site supervisor was a great resource who provided valuable advice and helped to manage our transition to the new space. I would highly recommend Flat Iron Building Group."

"We have had the pleasure to work with the Flat Iron Building Group on several projects at OCAD University at 205 Richmond Street West. The first project was the refit of the building’s second floor for a high profile multi-discipline and multi-university research and service group. Flat Iron was able to meet tight deadlines given within a difficult summer in Toronto with the G8 summit closing much of the downtown area, including the building. Their willingness to work through project and external issues resulted in a fast and quality installation of the design without unwanted compromises. The second project was the refit of the 7th floor at 205 Richmond St W which involved significant upgrades to the rooftop HVAC systems. Again Flat Iron was faced with external issues, this time the Toronto International Film Festival, and was able to creatively problem solve to meet the schedule and the quality of work expected. Daniel DeMonte manages his people and trades in a proactive style and collaborates effectively with client representatives."

“The drawings and specification were fully understood and they acknowledge that it formed the basis of the contract. Minutes of meetings were accurate and always issued. Flat Iron formed contracts with very good sub-trades and produced excellent quality work. Flat Iron’s paperwork is excellent.”

“Your leadership, professionalism and customer focus are a true asset and made our recent renovation seem almost effortless. From the start we had the utmost confidence in you and your team and were never disappointed.”

“The services provided were professional, well planned out, executed, and well managed from a budget perspective. The coordination of the work was exceptionally handled, and was therefore much appreciated.”

“We are so very pleased that we chose
to work with Flat Iron as our general contractor on this project. The high quality of communication between your team and our staff has been crucial to efficiently coordinating and implementing this project.”

“This project had a very aggressive schedule imposed by RBC Corporate Real Estate. It was also the first to experience the new RBC project governance process, to which Flat Iron showed great patience during this initial implementation. Through it all, Flat Iron provided a superior level of service I have not experienced from a general contractor in some time.

“I have recently completed two projects with Flat Iron and I can unequivocally state that in both cases extra effort was made to work together on the common goal of achieving a successful end result for the client. A proactive approach and attention to detail were never lacking. I am certainly looking forward to the next opportunity to work together with the Flat Iron team.”

“The timeline we were given was extremely tight, but Flat Iron made it happen with great success. The team had great communication and we were able to give the client a fantastic space that they are very pleased with. Great job!”

“Flat Iron provided high quality workmanship and site supervisors who knew how to get the job done to the client’s satisfaction. Clear communication and taking initiative are crucial to success on public sector projects and Flat Iron delivered. Looking forward to the next project.”

“Flat Iron was brought on-board as Construction Managers on a new office build-out for an international executive search firm, and their diligence and accuracy in developing detailed cost estimates of the schematic design laid the ground work for an enjoyable and effortless process. There was constant communication from the get-go, which led to an efficient project that was both on schedule and on budget. We would be happy to recommend Flat Iron for any construction project, and we look forward to working with you and your team in the future.”

“I am a program manager representing high profile internal clients. My primary role is to ensure that my client’s long lists of requirements are delivered on time and on budget. I’ve been fortunate to have engaged Flat Iron for several significant projects and I can quite honestly state that their client first approach to delivery minimized or eliminated many of the pitfalls that typically crop up during most construction projects. Ongoing communication and dedication are paramount to their operating model which as resulted in very successful projects which my clients are very happy with.”

We're also proud to have been the exclusive construction industry sponsor of multiple Wake Up Call Breakfast events in Toronto.
